The Masters is underway as the world’s best golfers head to Augusta, Georgia, to compete for the iconic green blazer – and Scottie Scheffler fights for his third win
The world’s most prestigious golf tournament is returning to our screens this week as 95 players head to Georgia to compete for the green blazer. Over the years, 56 men have won the Masters and this year reigning champion Scottie Scheffler will be hoping for his third win, while challenger Rory McIlroy will be fighting for his first.
Jack Nicklaus has won the tournament six times, holding the record for most victories. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods – who won’t be competing this year after an Achilles tendon injury – has won it five times. Arnold Palmer won it four times and five men have won three titles: Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson.
After winning last year’s Masters, Scheffler took home a $3.4million in winnings, and with the prize pot set again at $20million, this year’s winner will likely expect a similar amount.
The Masters was formed in 1934 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, who built a golf club near Augusta and decided to provide a service to golf by hosting a tournament there.
Among the tournament’s traditions is the iconic green jacket which has been awarded to every champion since 1949. Each winner must return it to the clubhouse a year after his victory where it will be stored with the other champions’ jackets in a special cloakroom.
