Yoane Wissa produced a goal and an assist as Brentford kicked off their 2024-25 Premier League campaign with a London derby win over Crystal Palace.
Bryan Mbeumo fired Brentford in front in the 29th minute when he raced onto a Wissa through pass before cutting inside onto his left foot and whipping a crisp shot past Dean Henderson.
But Palace hit back 11 minutes after half-time when Ethan Pinnock put the ball into his own net. Had Pinnock not intervened then Odsonne Edouard would have been left with a simple tap-in following Daniel Munoz’s headed cut-back.
Edouard then had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside call before Brentford retook the lead 14 minutes from time.
Henderson initially did well to keep out a deflected effort from Nathan Collins but he clawed the ball straight to Wissa, who bundled it over the line.

But Wissa restored Brentford’s lead by netting the winner from close range in the 76th minute
Earlier in the game, when the score was still 0-0, Palace had been left frustrated by a decision from referee Samuel Barrott, who was making his Premier League debut.
Barrott whistled for a foul for an apparent block as Eberechi Eze fired in a free-kick that ended up in back of the Brentford net.
The VAR was unable to review the incident because Barrott had blown his whistle before the ball went in.
Brentford’s impressive victory came after Ivan Toney had been left out of the matchday squad.
Manager Thomas Frank said before kick-off: ‘Things are happening for Ivan Toney so we decided not to involve him in the squad. There’s interest, nothing closed yet but things are happening.’
