Australia exacted revenge over New Zealand to win the Rugby League World Cup for the tenth time with a 34-2 victory at Old Trafford.

New Zealand stunned the Aussies back in 2008 by winning the trophy in Brisbane, but following their thrilling victory over England in the semi-finals at Wembley, they were overpowered by Australia, with both sides level at 2-2 after 18 minutes before Australia took command to storm to the trophy.

Jonathan Thurston kicked Australia into the lead after five minutes, but New Zealand replied with Shaun Johnson’s kick.

The first try of the final came from Billy Slater, as Australia took advantage of a dropout, and Thurston collected the extra points to give his nation the lead.

Australia’s second try came from Cooper Cronk, with Slater bagging his second try of the final just a minute into the second period. Brett Morris then got on the scoresheet with two tries.

“I am extremely proud. We came over and performed really well. Our defence was great and our attitude was terrific. I hope the 13-man code is pushed to the fore in this country by this game,” Australia coach Tim Sheens told the BBC.

“We didn’t start the game thinking that we couldn’t concede a try but as the game went on we did and the guys dug in. It is a great privilege for me to coach this team. We came to this tournament to win but you count nothing until the siren goes but we are relieved.”
